The growing interest in promoting high quality food from a local area has to overcome economic obstacles, maintaining high levels of safety and traceability. The “Filiera dei Piccoli” case study shows the relevance of Supply Chain Management in improving market orientation and in introducing new products.

Spelt of Monteleone di Spoleto, “fagiolina” of the Trasimeno lake, lentils of Castelluccio di Norcia, biodynamic chickpeas of Spello, saffron of Cascia, “roveja” of Civita di Cascia, are some of the niche products that are sold by members of “Filiera dei Piccoli” network.
Optimization of the distribution system of the network using a software and a genetic algorithm, allows to achieve savings that are used to offer this typical high quality food at competitive prices.
